Karl Popper’s Quantum Ghost
نویسندگان
چکیده
Karl Popper, though not trained as a physicist and embarrassed early in his career by a physics error pointed out by Einstein and Bohr, ultimately made substantial contributions to the interpretation of quantum mechanics. As was often the case, Popper initially formulated his position by criticizing the views of others—in this case Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg. Underlying Popper’s criticism was his belief that, first, the “standard interpretation” of quantum mechanics, sometimes called the Copenhagen interpretation, abandoned scientific realism and second, the assertion that quantum theory was “complete” (an assertion rejected by Einstein among others) amounted to an unfalsifiable claim. Popper insisted that the most basic predictions of quantum mechanics should continue to be tested, with an eye towards falsification rather than mere adding of decimal places to confirm atory experiments. His persistent attacks on the Copenhagen interpretation were aimed not at the uncertainty principle itself and the formalism from which it was derived, but at the acceptance by physicists of an unclear epistemology and ontology that left critical questions unanswered.

Karl Popper and the Copenhagen Interpretation
Popper conceived an experiment whose analysis led to a result that he deemed absurd. Popper wrote that his reasoning was based on the Copenhagen interpretation and therefore invalidated the latter. Actually, Popper’s argument involves counterfactual reasoning and violates Bohr’s complementarity principle. The absurdity of Popper’s result only confirms Bohr’s approach. I called thee to curse min...
متن کاملPopper, Falsification and the VC-dimension
We compare Sir Karl Popper’s ideas concerning the falsifiability of a theory with similar notions from VC-theory. Having located some divergences, we discuss how best to view Popper’s work from the perspective of statistical learning theory.
متن کاملThe views of Karl Popper and Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI on a theory of rationality
Typical of some contemporary theories of rationality is the pithily formulated idea stated almost 20 years ago by Gillian Rose (1947-1995) in her autobiography: «Reason, the critical criterion, is forever without ground». One important way of understanding this statement is found in the early writings of Karl R. Popper (1902-1994). This statement expresses the conviction at the root of Popper’s...
متن کاملPopper’s test of Quantum Mechanics
A test of quantum mechanics proposed by K. Popper and dealing with twoparticle entangled states emitted from a fixed source has been criticized by several authors. Some of them claim that the test becomes inconclusive once all the quantum aspects of the source are considered. Moreover, another criticism states that the predictions attributed to quantum mechanics in Popper’s analysis are untenab...
متن کاملWhat is Dialectic
Karl Popper famously opposed Marxism in general and its philosophical core – the Marxist dialectic – in particular. As a progressive thinker, Popper saw in dialectic a source of dogmatism damaging to philosophy and political theory. Popper had summarized his views on dialectic in an article that was first delivered in 1937 and subsequently republished as a chapter of his book (2002, pp. 419-451...
